Your Crawlspace?

An often overlooked area of ventilation is the crawlspace in the foundation of a home; crawlspace ventilation should never be overlooked. A properly installed crawlspace ventilation system will provide much needed moisture control. This helps eliminate environments favorable to mold, mildew, termites and other insects.

Lomanco provides a complete line of foundation vents. Lomanco offers foundation vents in plastic, die-cast aluminum and all aluminum construction. Foundation vents are available in several styles – shutter style, hinged louver style, and with a damper for tight closure.

Lomanco foundation vents are designed with an 8×8 perma-coated aluminum screen attached and are engineered for maximum weather protection. Most vents are available in the standard concrete block size – 16” x 18”.

Conserve Energy…

Proper ventilation conserves energy all year long, while improper attic ventilation is one of the most common energy-wasters in homes today.

During hot summer months, it is not uncommon for a poorly ventilated attic to reach temperatures between 140 and 150 degrees.  This superheated air not only speeds the deterioration of paint, roofing, and insulation, but penetrates down through the ceiling to heat the entire living area.

Proper ventilation removes superheated attic air.  Therefore, air conditioning systems don’t have to work as long or as hard. Cooling bills will be lower, and the cooling system will last longer.

During cold winter months, attic ventilation is equally important to reduce attic condensation. A home relies on insulation to help retain heat produced by a heating system; if insulation in an improperly ventilated attic becomes wet from moisture it becomes practically useless. This allows heat to escape through the attic, a waste of money and energy.  To ensure proper attic ventilation it is important to keep air moving — a complete exchange of attic air should take place every six minutes.

Properly installed Lomanco Vents keep air moving through your home year round.

Whether you’re a home owner or home builder, the best return on investment for protecting the longevity of your house is the proper installation of a balanced ventilation system with the proven performance and quality of Lomanco Vents.

All Lomanco products are geared toward saving energy, increasing efficiency, and enhancing the performance of your home’s building products.

Solar power, wind power or the plain power of physics, Lomanco vents have been going green from the get go!

Ventilation for your attic space is essential, but don’t forget the crawlspace – read our next article, Don’t Forget the Crawlspace, to learn about crawlspace ventilation.

Three Must Do Steps…

Determining how to ventilate a home can seem like a daunting task if unfamiliar with ventilation systems, but here at Lomanco we have “3 Must Do Steps to Attic Ventilation” to help. The three must do steps listed below are common to all ventilation systems; these steps can also be found printed on our instructions and product boxes.

3 Must Do Steps to Attic Ventilation

Step 1

Install all exhaust ventilation at the same height within a common attic area.
It is very important to install all exhaust vents at the same height or level – installation of exhaust vents at more than one level on a roof allows the upper exhaust vents to pull air from lower exhaust vents instead of the intake vents. This can cause damaging weather infiltration to a home or structure.

Intake air must come from intake vents located near the lower part of the attic space to properly ventilate the total attic area and eliminate weather infiltration.

Step 2

Install only one type of exhaust ventilation within a common attic area.
Exhaust vents pull air from the easiest intake source; therefore vent types cannot be mixed. The use of different types of exhaust vents could make one of the exhaust vents act as intake for the other.

As previously stated in step one, intake air must come from intake vents located near the lower part of the attic space to properly ventilate the total attic area and eliminate weather infiltration.

Step 3

Install a balanced system of intake and exhaust ventilation.
50% intake ventilation – Intake vents located near the lower part of the attic area are required to balance out a ventilation system.

50% exhaust ventilation – Use a Lomanco ventilation selector guide or the calculators at lomanco.com to determine the number of vents needed to properly ventilate an attic to the ventilation minimum property standards.
